We have tried to be fair: every competitor claim below was checked against that app's official site in July 2026, every competitor's name links to its own site so you can check us, and where a competitor is the stronger choice, we say so. Machinist calculators

ChipBreaker is an offline speeds-and-feeds and tap-drill calculator — eight shop tools, zero internet — built for hobby machinists at manual machines. It has no CNC depth by design. Here is how it sits next to the tools CNC machinists actually use:

The honest read: if you run CNC and want deep, tool-specific numbers, FSWizard is the frequent recommendation on machinist forums, and its full version is honestly priced. HSMAdvisor is the heavier professional tool on Windows. ChipBreaker deliberately doesn't compete there — no CNC depth, no tool database. It is eight shop tools, zero internet: conservative low-end starting speeds, tap drill, bolt circle, sine bar, and the everyday shop math, sized for big buttons and greasy fingers at a manual mill or lathe. A third name from older forum threads, G-Wizard, is no longer for sale: sales were suspended after founder Bob Warfield's sudden death in 2024, and the site's caretakers cannot sell licenses or update the software, though the last released version remains downloadable.

Medication lists

Pillbook is a record keeper, not an advisor — and it is not a reminder app. It never buzzes, pings, or alarms; it keeps the list legible and current. If reminders are what you need, the right choice is one of the first two apps below:

The honest read: if you want an app that reminds you to take your pills, Pillbook is the wrong choice. MedTimer does reminders well — free, open source, no account, everything on the phone — and Medisafe is the full-featured reminder app on both platforms; its free tier is now capped at 2 medications, and from 1 January 2026 its own terms require a paid subscription in certain countries outside the US. Med-List is the closest in spirit to Pillbook — a plain, no-account reference list that says outright it is not a reminder app; if you would rather have a native iPhone app than an installable web app, it is a fair pick and honestly built. Pillbook is the paper list made legible: grouped by time of day, marked taken in one tap, printed as a wallet card or the full list you hand the ER, in five languages, fully offline.

Password books

Safebox is not a password manager — no autofill, no browser extension, no generator, no sync. It is the little book behind a PIN, for people who want nothing online. The two apps beside it are real password managers, and good ones:

The honest read: if autofill, browser extensions, and a password generator are what you want, use a real password manager. KeePassXC is free, open source, and powerful, and is often described as having a steeper learning curve — a tool for people comfortable with tools. Enpass keeps your data on your own device or your own cloud storage and still does the modern conveniences, without a vendor cloud. But if those feel like flying a plane when all you wanted was to write things down, that is the buyer Safebox is for: contacts, passwords, and important numbers behind a 6-digit PIN, stored scrambled, with an encrypted backup file — and no recovery, which is the honest trade. Forget the PIN and the book is gone, same as paper.

Invoicing

Invoicer is an offline invoice app for one-man tradesmen — a fast invoice on the fly, emailable as a clean PDF. The carbon pad, without the carbon. Its honest limits, up front: no card payments, no payment reminders, no cloud sync — by design.

The honest read: every other app in this table does things Invoicer deliberately doesn't — card payments, automatic payment reminders, cloud sync, bookkeeping. Tradify is full job management for a trades business with staff. Invoice Simple and Bookipi are polished and quick, and Bookipi's free plan is a fair deal if three invoices a month covers you. Tofu covers US contractors with field-service extras and works offline. Invoicer's whole pitch runs the other way: no account, nothing in the cloud, the invoice built with a big keypad right from the truck and handed over as a clean white-paper PDF. You keep the PDFs you send — they are your records.
